Allan Markwell, a neurotic postgraduate student, by chance discovers THE LOWELL LETTERS in Arizona. These provide evidence that PERCIVAL LOWELL observed the CANALS OF MARS in the late Nineteenth Century. They also point to the fact that Lowell's discovery was hushed up. Gradually, Allan uncovers a World threatening conspiracy by the modern successors of those who initiated the cover-up for their own purposes, THE MARS SOCIETY. They are now on the verge of putting into action plans that would be disastrous for the rest of the World's population. The Society tries to capture Allan and the documents, but he goes into hiding in Cornwall. Over the summer he comes to realise that it is up to him to publicise his discoveries and save the world from catastrophe. But has there ever been a saviour who is more unsuited to his task?
