InterCity has become one of the most widely known brand names in the UK. It is, in fact, the trading name of one of British Rail's operating sectors, responsible for the most important routes. In 1988/89 it became the first long distance passenger rail network in the world to achieve profitable status, without any government subsidy. In April 1994, InterCity will be broken up into eight train companies and numerous infrastructure companies retaining the InterCity brand name.
