Waterstones Says

Woven into the very fabric of the national consciousness, Tolkien’s staggeringly realised Middle Earth plays host to dwarves and dragons, Gollum and Gandalf amongst many others. With The Hobbit, British fantasy fiction soared onto another level and its influence and echo resound through every major work of the imagination written since.

The classic bestseller behind this year's biggest movie, this definitive paperback edition features nine illustrations and two maps drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien, and a preface by Christopher Tolkien.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey `there and back again'. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon...

The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the twentieth century.

Ilove it I have read The Hobbit before but what a beautiful imagination that Tolkien had a timeless masterpiece.

“Quintessential Fantasy (Potential Spoilers)”

So the Hobbit was a re-read for me, although it felt more like reading it for the first time. I first read it about ten years ago, when I was seven at the oldest. Coming back to it ten years later is weird, especially... More

“One of my favourite books!”

I first read The Hobbit in my teens, and the story has stayed with me ever since. I love this cover, it really gives a feel of Bag End! A great introduction to Tolkien's wonderfully epic world of Middle Earth.
