This work demonstrates, through a selection of Robert Francis' depictions of Robert Frost, the importance of an often overlooked literary friendship that influenced the lives of these New England poets. In his poem, entitled "Axe Handles," poet and environmental icon Gary Snyder pays homage to twentieth century literary paragon Ezra Pound in his honoring the passing, of batons, or axe handles in this case, of the legacy of one to another, or in the very least a sense of literary history and an acknowledgement of that. Literary mentorship is often uncommon as is literary success. However, the expectation before meeting Robert Frost for the young Robert Francis had mounted for years before its burgeoning into a full-fledged friendship with the already famous poet. The relationship between the two was not without its tension, on at least one occasion, but it would remain one of mutual respect, despite inherent differences between the two men.
