This volume offers an accessible and thought-provoking guide to this major renaissance tragedy, surveying its key themes and evolving critical preoccupations. Providing a uniquely detailed and up-to-date history of the play's rich stage performance, it looks closely at major contemporary performances on both sides of the Atlantic, including Declan Donnellan's 2006 production for Cheek by Jowl starring Tom Hiddleston, Dominic Dromgoole's production at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in 2014 and Jesse Berger's 2016 production at The Red Bull Theater. Moving through to four new critical essays, the guide opens up fresh perspectives, including an exploration of the characters' mechanical psychology, the influence of Spanish literature and its treatment of virginity and rape on the construction of Middleton and Rowley's plot, recent theatre-makers' handling of the play's dramaturgy, and two contemporary adaptations: Sarah Harding's TV transposition Compulsion starring Ray Winston, and Marcus Thompson's experimental version of the play. The volume finishes with a guide to critical, web-based, audio and video resources, discussing the ways in which they can be used in the classroom in order to aid understanding and provoke further debate. Concluding with an annotated bibliography of the most notable scholarship on the play from 2000 onwards, it will provide an accessible starting point for further independent research.
