From the modern perspective, the Christian churches yearn and pray for the restoration of the unity of the early church. Once, despite the heresies and the quarrels, that unity was more or less a reality. Then Pope Leo IX sent a delegation to Constantinople in 1054 in an attempt to force and humiliate the Eastern church to submit to the supremacy of Rome. Politically, the moment seemed opportune. The Normans had burst into Sicily and Italy, and the last remaining outposts of the Byzantine Empire in the West were threatened by their ambition. Leo sought to use the threat of the Normans as a lever to further the religious and political ambitions of the Supreme Pontiff. The Emperor, Constantine IX, was amenable to the Roman overtures, but the Patriarch of Constantinople, Michael Cerularius, was decidedly not. When the Roman delegation was on the point of achieving the Papacy's dearest ambition, the Patriarch intervened, with consequences that shattered Christian unity and echoed down the centuries.
