Situated at the mouth of the River Axe, the coastal resort of Seaton boasts over 1900 years of history. In addition to shipbuilding, a salt industry existed here, dating from the Iron Age. A fort and lighthouse once stood on the sea front. The Axmouth Bridge is the third oldest concrete bridge in England, dating from 1877, and the toll-house is the oldest concrete building. The first mention of Seaton was in 1146, before which it was known as Aut-Fleote, founded in AD1005.
