The village of Markyate lies in the valley of the River Ver in the Chiltern Hills. The foundation of Markyate started with the Priory in the twelfth century, and continued with settlement along the old Roman Watling Street. Up until 1897 the village was in three separate parishes - Studham, Caddington and Flamstead. Most of the east side of the High Street was very well planned and was in Caddington parish. The other parts of the village built up in a piecemeal fashion as the needs of travellers and transport grew.
