Haughley lies at the head of the Gipping Valley and was one of the furthest points accessible by boat from the sea at Ipswich. It was close to the main Roman road from Colchester to the North, and today it sits beside the main trunk road from Felixstowe and Harwich to the Midlands. The railway junction at Haughley was where mail from all over Britain merged on its way to Harwich and the continent. Today, nearby Stowmarket station and fast trains to London make it an attractive commuter base.
