The Battle of San Romano was fought on June 1, 1432. Had it not been celebrated in Paolo Uccello's famous pictorial cycle (now split between the National Gallery in London, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Louvre), it would probably be remembered today by only a handful of scholars. The episode formed part of a larger conflict, the so-called 'War of Lucca', of which Machiavelli famously wrote: 'The Florentines, Lucchese and Sienese, who had each occupied many fortresses belonging to the others during the war, eventually gave them all up, each party resuming its original possessions'.
