Bryozoans are encrusting colonial organisms which are ubiquitous in freshwater and marine environments. As the dominant sessile organisms of the Antarctic shelf seas, they are a pivotal component of the ecosystem. This is the first identification guide to the Bryozoa and describes and illustrates all 264 species of cheilostomate Bryozoa which have been recorded from the Antarctic seas. It includes an illustrated dichotomous key to the genera, and for each genus there is a key to Antarctic species. All species are fully described, and a clear diagnosis is given for each genus, family, and superfamily.

MEDIA REVIEWS
All species are fully described, and a clear diagnosis is given for each genus, family, and superfamily. * Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the UK, Vol. 76 (4) November 1996 *
Peter Hayward has produced a guide to a regional fauna that ranks with the best available for other, more intensively-studied parts of the world. This book will be indispensable to bryozoan specialists, and of great value of to all benthic ecologists working in the Antarctic region. * David J. Hughes, J. Exp. Mar. Biol. Ecol. 208 (1997) *
the reader will find much of the necessary, but potentially confusing, morphological jargon readily explained here ... this is a very thorough and comprehensive text which has been produced to a very high level of quality ... For many year to come this text surely will be an indispensible source of information, and relief, to those wanting to identify Antarctic bryozoan species. * C.D. Todd & M.M. Bayer, Antarctic Science *
