"As a child I used to loving reading books and it has been quite a few years since I last read a middle grade children's novel, until recently when I had the pleasure of reading the manuscript of the Adventures of Poppy and Lord Ted: The First Summer. This book is a beautiful, warm hearted read for children that captures the wonderful relationship that the lead character; 8-year-old Poppy has with a magical teddy bear called Lord Ted, her grandparents, and friends. This exciting adventure focuses on the theft of the crown jewels and the kidnapping of a warder from the Tower of London. As the story unfolds, Poppy and Lord Ted soon find themselves entangled in the mystery. I believe that the story is well written and there were some delightful scenes (a visit from the tooth fairies) where the author's whit really shone through for me. I think a child would recognise and enjoy these funny moments too. Throughout the story you do feel that love, honesty, and respect amongst all the characters which help shape the young lady that Poppy is becoming. Good family values through fun and adventure appears to be an underlying message that the author is trying to get across, which I think is an important one for today's society. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as I could connect to the characters. I can't wait to see the book published.
