Waterstones Says

Nimble, lively and laced with sparkling wit, Smith’s tale of a family forced to confront their true selves by the arrival of an intoxicating stranger is an absolute delight. A sprightly story about the very nature of storytelling and the elasticity of truth, The Accidental is one of Ali Smith’s most accomplished novels.

'Joyous' The Times

The Accidental pans in on the Norfolk holiday home of the Smart family one hot summer. There a beguiling stranger called Amber appears at the door bearing all sorts of unexpected gifts, trampling over family boundaries and sending each of the Smarts scurrying from the dark into the light.

A novel about the ways that seemingly chance encounters irrevocably transform our understanding of ourselves, The Accidental explores the nature of truth, the role of fate and the power of storytelling.

*****

'Brilliant and engaging, frequently hilarious. . . Smith makes one look at the world afresh' Sunday Telegraph

'Funny, sexy, poignant, bewitching' Observer

'A beguiling page-turner . . . To read The Accidental is to be excited from first to last' Independent

“Weird and Wonderful!”

The plot for this novel should seem simple enough: a stranger interrupts and family holiday, and instead of leaving right away, she stays for a long while. Then, as oddly as she arrived, she leaves. The novel is about... More

“The Accidental”

Couldn't get into this book, found the characters and writing style slightly annoying. Eventually I gave up and never finished it, which is something I've only once before.
