This report analyzes the benefits of adaptive antennas (AA) to mobile network operators. Taking into account multilayer cellular universal mobile telecommunications systems (UMTS), a critical analysis is made of the radio cell planning techniques currently adopted for second-generation GSM/DCS systems. The capacity benefits due to spacial domain multiple access (SDMA), and the universal requirements for signalling and control channels in future systems are considered. The costs of basestation sub-system infrastructure is analyzed through detailed cell range and capacity dimensioning. Conclusions are drawn on the likely adoption of AA in future public land MTS. The series of reports results from Technology in Smart Antennas for Universal Advanced Mobile Infrastructure (Part II), a major research project on the application of adaptive antennas (AA) to the next generation of universal mobile telecommunications systems (MTS).
