As more and more school districts have adopted standards-based curricula to meet the national concern of leaving no child behind, teachers will increasingly need additional materials to address the country's diverse student population. This book addresses this need by providing busy classroom teachers with classroom activities to help them implement the National Council of Teacher Mathematics (NCTM) Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.

MEDIA REVIEWS
The students were able to develop and practice their measurement skills, and were pleased with the stars they made. They were able to relate the star to their cultural celebration. Many enjoyed participating in a cooperative activity. Some realized the focus of the lesson was on the measurement standard.
Whitman's innovative lessons use math as a bridge to Pacific and Asian cultures. Everything is provided-background information, lesson plans, recommendations for children's books, and professional references-so busy teachers will be able to implement the lessons easily and effectively. I enthusiastically recommend this book as a way to enliven content area instruction and celebrate students' cultural heritages. -- Andrea Bartlet, associate professor, literacy education, Univesity of Hawaii at Manoa
My students were able to relate to the activities and found them 'fun.' I think relating the activities to their environment and culture was helpful. Some students asked for more lessons... -- Anita Wong, eighth-grade mathematics teacher, Kalakaua Middle School, Honolulu, HI
