Migration has been an integral part of societies in Asia and the Pacific for as long as there have been populations living there. This publication reviews the social dimensions of international migration by looking at three key areas: the basic pattern of migration in the ESCAP Region; key social issues in the impact of migration; the issue of return. Next, the policy implications are addressed by considering policies by destination and by origin. This paper is key for policy makers who need to prepare policies that maximize the benefits and minimize the potential problems that migration will bring.
