The single wheeler locomotives are considered by many to be the most handsome type of steam locomotive ever to have graced the rails of Britain. The "single" had only one driving axle and needed no coupling rods. They were good to look at as well as being efficient machines, but in the event their days were short. This book tells how and why, during the last few years of the 19th century, the type was favoured by eight of the major railway companies of Britain and why they were soon replaced by other types.
