This text identifies a gap in the throughcare provision offered by the probation service under the 1991 Criminal Justice Act. It shows that no provision is made for short-term offenders, and its absence may explain why many of them return to criminal activity after release. As a result of interviews with prisoners carried out soon after sentence and shortly before their release, the author is able to shed new light on the procedures they experience and the extent to which their needs are met.
