Southwark lies in the heart of London on the South Bank of the River Thames. Historically part of Surrey it lay outside the jurisdiction of the City of London and developed as London's entertainment centre, including bull and bear baiting and was also the site chosen by the Church for Southwark Cathedral. Southwark was renowned for its inns in mediaeval times and Caucer's pilgrims departed for Canterbury from the Tabard Inn. During Queen Elizabeth I's reign London's theatres were built on Bankside, first the Rose Theatre and then the Globe, putting on plays by Marlowe, Shakespeare and others. Just across the river lay the other theatre centre of Elizabethan London, in the old priory buildings of the Black Friars which earlier had been the location of the divorce hearings between Henry VIII and Katharine of Aragon and the birthplace of Katharine Parr. Southwark was also the home of several prisons including the original `Clink' and Marshalsea. Southwark went into decline in the late 19th and early 20th centuries but today is being regenerated with the rebirth of Borough Market, the conversion of Bankside power station into Tate Modern and historical buildings such as the George Inn in Borough standing cheek by jowel with modern buildings such as the Shard. Tucked away among the redevelopment are many reminders of Southwark's past, including a replica of Francis Drake's Golden Hind, the Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret. Secret Southwark and Blackfriars explores the lesser known stories and characters behind Southwark and Blackfriars' fascinating history through the centuries from its earliest days. With tales of extraordinary characters, remarkable events and hidden historical buildings, Secret Southwark and Blackfriars will appeal to all those with an interest in London's South Bank.
