The aim of this book is to help non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in areas of armed conflict to protect their staff more effectively, and hence improve their chances of continuing their humanitarian activites. Drawing on Save the Children's experience of organizing relief work in disputed areas world-wide, the authors examine safety from a variety of angles, including: basic principles, such as the concept of "risk management" and the importance of non-partisanship; "safety conscious" management practices; practical security measures relating to staying healthy, radio and satellite communication, using vehicles and aircraft, dealing with munitions and the military, the threat of landmines, and self-defence against armed attack; and advice on how to evacuate employees and explain actions to the media. The guiding principle throughout the book is that security is everyone's business, meaning that individual employees bear as much responsibility for their own safety as the NGO that employs them.
