This is one of a series of reports on the application of adaptive antennas to the next generation of mobile communications systems. This project, "Technology in Smart Antennas from Universal Mobile Infrastructure" (TSUNAMI), funded under the European Commission's RACE programme, is being undertaken by a consortium of seven European organizations led by ERA. This report deals with the impact of AAs on cell architectures and process of cell planning. An evolutionary approach towards the introduction of this technology into current and future generations of MTS is presented, allowing separate approaches to cell planning to optimize the benefits of this new technique at each stage of the evolutionary steps is discussed: high-sensitivity reception (HSR); spacial filtering for interference reduction (SFIR); and space division multiple access (SMDA). The report examines relationship between sectorization and AAs and spectrum efficiency, and the concept of power classes and the impact on the AA gain is discussed. Finally, the relationship between AAs and hierarchical cell structures is dealt with. Useful conclusions and a list of references are provided.
