Mitomycin, first isolated as an antibiotic, has proved active in antineoplastic therapy against a variety of tumors. It is one of the most effective drugs against non-small-cell lung cancer, and is part of several regimens used in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Over the years it has also claimed a role in the treatment options for esophageal, gastric, pancreatic and anal canal carcinomas. As anticancer chemotherapy is constantly evolving in the search for a cure or improved efficacy against cancer, so is the role of mitomycin in the treatment regimens. This supplement will highlight the most recent experience of investigators using mitomycin in treatment regimens against a variety of cancers.
