This book consists of a series of reprints developing the subject of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. Basic issues like the definition of the vacuum global effects of spacetime on quantum fields, violation of energy conditions, and formal aspects like propagators and heat kernels, effective action and renormalization are discussed. Other topics discussed are novel processes that occur in curved spacetime, such as the creation of elementary particles by strong gravitational fields in the early universe and near black holes. The astrophysical and cosmological implications of the subject are also explored.
