The conference from which this report is drawn addressed the problems arising from the recent structural, economic and technical changes in the UK electricity supply. It considered the integration of differing power supplies, the quality of supply, process sensitivity and the problems caused by the rising level of harmonic distortion, and finally practical approaches to protecting electrical networks. After an opening address, "Quality of electricity supply in a de-regulated industry", the papers under "The changing environment of electricity supply" cover: supply quality, and the relationship between electricity industry planning standards, international EMC standards and quality of supply. "Integration of power systems" deals with: connection of generators for parallel operation with a network supplying the public, integration of embedded generation onto the public electricity supply networks, pharmaceutical facilities - providing a reliable power supply, and case studies of operating considerations omitted from the design of local electrical networks. "Assessing quality of supply" studies: supply problems and solutions - an overview, techniques and instruments for monitoring power quality, and current and future trends in power quality instrumentation. "Managing quality of supply" looks at: measuring and controlling quality of supply, protection audits - the benefits to industry and the software methodologies employed, electrical supply quality perspectives in Europe - implications for the UK, and a total solution package - custom power. Supplementary papers include: the line-interactive concept - an optimal appraoch to UPS, communication relays - a cost-effective solution to power system management, comprehensive voltage evaluation according to EN 50 160 - a contribution to quality assurance, advances in consumer level protection, and the impact of integrating embedded generation into utilities' distribution networks.
