December 1941: The United States enters into war and attempts to support the Chinese nationalists (Guomindang) who allied with them against Japan. 1942: President Roosevelt launches Operation Dragon to support the Guomindang and decides to send a Secret Service contingent to Tibet, directed by Brooke Dolan and Ilya Tolstoy (grandson of the writer). They carried a letter, dated 3 July 1942, which President Roosevelt addressed to the Dalai Lama, to obtain safe passage for him and to resupply General Stivell and the Guomindang.
