Omeprazole is a new drug which effectively controls gastric acid secretion by means of acid pump inhibitors. However, the achievement of greater and more prolonged control of acid secretion has raised concerns about the possible consequences of treatment. Issues such as rebound acid secretion, hypergastrinaemia, bacterial overgrowth and enteric infection, and the theoretical risk of carcinogenesis and genotoxicity have attracted increasing attention. This proceedings issue, based on a symposium held in London in 1990, addresses these controversial issues and provides an overview designed to enable readers to evaluate objectively the scientific validity of current studies.
