With more than 11,000 entries, this volume is the first extensive bibliography of North Carolina to incorporate books, pamphlets, articles from hundreds of journals, and theses and dissertations from scores of universities. Using the incomparable holdings of the North Carolina Collection as well as other libraries and institutions, Jones includes entries dating from the first written description of North Carolina in 1524 through 1992. Entries are arranged by chronological period, then by subject, with author and subject indexes providing further access. Entries are arranged by chronological period, then by subject, with author and subject indexes providing further access. Among the sources included are some that are seldom found in state bibliographies, such as soil surveys of the counties and articles in small journals, such as The North Carolina Booklet. A separate chapter features more then 3,000 entries by county. Another chapter identifies libraries, archives and manuscript repositories, museums, and historic sites.

MEDIA REVIEWS
..."provides a strong starting place for serious research, not only in North Carolina history, but also in the history of early America, the American South, genealogy, Native and African Americans, women in America, and more. Recommended for all medium-size and large North Carolina libraries, as well as for large academic and public library research collections regardless of geographic location."-Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin
"There is so much to admire about this book that it is difficult to chose a place to begin....it will never become obsolete--its entire contents will always fill a need. Supplements may update it, but none can ever supplant it."-AHNC Journal
"Jone's compilation is undoubtedly the most comprehensive and user-friendly bibliography of North Carolina history to date. Recommended for academic libraries at institutions with graduate programs in history and related fields, and for historical records repositories emphasizing state and local history."-Choice
"One of North Carolina's most dedicated public servants has added another jewel to his crown of achievements. North Carolina History will be enormously useful for many years to come as a tool for historians, librarians, and those who seek facts about varied aspects of the Tar Heel State."- The North Carolina Historical Review
