Half a century after its discovery, investigators are still exploring the role of angiotensin in human and animal physiology. This special issue investigates the renin-angiotensin system in the kidney and presents the latest research advances made by leading specialists in the field. These advances include the employment of molecular biology techniques which have unraveled the existence of an intrarenal renin-angiotensin generating system and the development of the isolated perfused macula densa technique which allows detailed studies on how renin secretion is regulated. Consequently, scientists have greatly improved their understanding of the cellular mechanism of angiotensin II actions and their role in the regulation of cell growth, renal haemodynamics and tubule transport.
