In the drinking water industry it is now recognised that natural organic material (NOM) is the major factor controlling all treatment processes. As a result, it has a significant effect on both the cost and the quality of drinking water. Over the past 20 years excellent research has been undertaken to gain an understanding of NOM and how it impacts on these processes. However, the complexity of the NOM, the variability between waters, and the number of NOM issues confronting the water industry has meant that we still have many unanswered questions. One of the crucial questions is ?How can all of this great research and increased understanding of NOM be converted to treatment efficiencies and cost savings by the water industry?? The 3rd NOM conference was developed to address these important issues and try to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical application. This issue of Water Science and Technology: Water Supply contains 32 peer-reviewed papers selected for their practical application, or potential for practical application, as well as their excellent scientific content. Researchers, water managers and students interested in the environment and water quality issues will find these papers of great value.
