For the last time the sentries on the gate have presented arms to the Queen, on her way to Balmoral, and on a 'grey old English day' George Jones has moved into Buckingham Palace. With no crowds to meet him and now no sentries at the gate, it is clear that times have changed. But many of the people at the Palace conspire, from Albert and Victoria (several of each) in the attics to Guiseppe of Balham and Herne the Hunter at Windsor, to make the alteration less permanent than at first it seemed. And then there is the discovery of a simple gold coronet in a cupboard...As Lucius Cary said as long ago as the seventeenth century, 'When it is not necessary to change, then it is necessary not to change.'
