The story of Maria Gulovich is perfect fodder for a long overdue film featuring a genuine war heroine. Here was a beautiful young woman who became part of the Slovak underground after hiding a Jewish woman and her child - a capital offense. Later she would go on to become the guide and interpreter for the American OSS agents and downed flyers stranded behind enemy lines when the Nazis attacked, her only goal being to guide them to the approaching Red Army where they would be safe. The mission was tragic because of the loss of so many men, but it was also miraculous in that many of them survived to tell the story of the mission. This book tells the story of Gulovich's unlikely heroism, focusing on the former elementary schoolteacher's courageous actions in saving American OSS agents. It describes how, while trapped with the agents behind enemy lines, she forayed into enemy occupied villages to find scarce food for the starving men, spied out enemy troop strength, and occasionally obtained shelter from blizzards with terrified but kind citizens. For her heroism, the U.S. government presented her with a Bronze Star. The work includes an extensive bibliography, a map of the area held by insurrectionists, and several photographs offering a glimpse of World War II seldom seen.
