The 52 illustrated maps in this book invite the reader on a journey of exploration around the world. Opening with an original style of contents page, consisting of a world map with countries labelled with the pages where information can be found, the atlas is divided into eight sections, looking at countries within each continent plus the Arctic and Antarctica. Not every country in, fro example Africa or South America, is included, but, those that are, give a flavour of the variety to be found there. I like the way that the European section travels southwards from Iceland, which means that countries such as Croatia and Romania are given equal space alongside the perhaps more familiar France and Spain. There is a dearth of information about some of these places (publishers tend to concentrate on what they see as the 'main' countries), particularly for young children. This book would have been very welcome at my school last term when Iceland was included in the Year 1 topic of Around the World! Each large, intricately detailed double page spread features fascinating facts, places of interest, wildlife and important people, all of which could provide a springboard for discussion and further research. This is an innovative approach to geography which will keep young and not so young, discoverers coming back again and again to pore over the quirky, delightful drawings. My family all love maps so this delightful book called Maps by Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski and published by @bigpicturepress has had us enthralled. With 52 highly illustrated maps featuring geographical features as well as places of interest, political borders, native animals and plants, people, cultural events and many more facts I think I think I could look at this book every day and still find something new to look at.The oversized coffee table book has double page spreads of each map, beginning with a world map then split into continents, with maps from a selection of countries from that continent behind the continent map. The continent maps are more basic than the country maps, but still include facts like the number of countries, the area and sealife. The country pages are very detailed and all include the flag, capital city, the languages spoken, population, and area as well as a host of other illustrations about the country including the wildlife, food, buildings, famous people and many more.I've spent a lot of looking at the pages with my nephew aged 7 and he has been fascinated with the book. The detail in the book is simply amazing and it really has captured his imagination. I love books like this that that introduce geography and culture to children without them realising that they are actually learning! The illustrations are fantastic and there is so much to see on each page, I especially like that every item is properly named whether it be a fish, fruit, tree or flower. There is also a Flags of the World section of the book which is a great teaching aid.With so much to see this book would make a lovely Christmas gift and will certainly keep everyone entertained after Christmas lunch! - Review Studio UK
