This is part of a series of 20 annotated bibliographies of the principal World War II and post war leaders. Each bibliography contains a biographical essay and chronology, survey of manuscript resources, annotated bibliography of historical and biographic works on the subject and their place in history, speeches and writings by the subject, a summary of newspaper coverage and a bibliography of relevant newspapers. Each editor is an academic specialist. This particular biography comprises material published in English plus some important works in other well-known langauges. In the case of Mao's writings, reference is made where possible to the authorised Chinese translation, with cross-reference to other sources. The Wade-Giles system of transcribing Chinese characters is being superseded by the Chinese phonetic alphabet, known as Pinyin. THis has been used in all publications and documents put out in the People's Republic of China since 1st January 1979. It is now replacing Wade-Giles in the cataloguing system of Western libraries. The citation of works in this bibliography follows the form used in the original publication.
