There are admittedly, a fair number of books on CSR. However few address the concept through down-to-earth, practical examples. Managing Corporate Responsibility in Emerging Markets: Issues, Cases and Solutions attempts to fill this gap by initiating International Managers into rethinking and retooling the concept of CSR: by highlighting how ignoring socially and environmentally responsible behavior in their organization's business practices can not only result in poor public relations but can create real and costly risks. The six issue areas covered-the environment, piracy, complicity and bribery, treatment of minorities/local communities and supply chain management-are merely the tip of the iceberg. They are chosen to illustrate how the actions of organizations can create both social calamities and environmental hazards, along with business risks, when organizations fail to integrate real corporate responsibility into their daily business activities. Focus is placed on the extractive industry due to the global nature of its business activities. Managing Corporate Responsibility in Emerging Markets: Issues, Cases and Solutions takes a case study approach towards illustrating how the lack of forethought and planning by oil and gas and mining companies, can lead to environmental hazards as in the case of Chevron in the Amazon in Ecuador, or lead to accusations of complicity in human rights violations as in the cases of the Royal Dutch Company and the Union Oil Company of California (Unocal). The case study approach also illustrates how good practices of companies such as Starbucks, Vale Inco, and Chevron in New Guinea, can provide examples of how forethought and careful planning can create both social/environmental good and a sustainable and profitable business. All case studies will have the following structure: description, critical analysis with questions examining the situation, lessons learned and recommendations.
