By far the most important work before me is Stanford's splendid non-liturgical setting of Magnificat, Op. 164, for unaccompanied double choir, where the Latin text is clothed with vivacious and spirited writing which clearly has its roots in the great motets of Bach and Brahms: indeed, any chamber choir or choral society that is familiar with 'Lobet den Herren' will relish this magnificent work. Intended as a tribute to Parry, the writing throughout is masterly, and it is hoped that this new edition, prepared by John Rutter, will give rise to more frequent performances. * CMQ April 99 *
