When Eva's mother abandons her on Iris's front porch, the girls don't seem to have much in common - except, they soon discover, a father. Thrown together with no mothers to care for them and a father who could not be considered a parent, Iris and Eva become one another's family. Iris wants to be a movie star; Eva is her sidekick. Together, they journey across 1940s America from scandal in Hollywood to the jazz clubs and golden mansions of Long Island, stumbling, cheating and loving their way through a landscape of war, betrayals and big dreams.

“Not great, but with some moments of interest”

A bit of an odd one, really. I enjoyed the references to movies and the glitz (if rather fluid and changeable glitz) of 1940s American high-life. The flat-out dazzling first line gives way to an at times tedious novel... More

The book takes place in the 1940's, with abit of a sad beginning. The sisters seem abit counter active. Only seems to be in one sister point of view. Lots of movie references, and actors. The one sister wants to... More

“Sisters!”

This book explores the relationship between two sisters. It is set in the 1940's.
Loved the start. Thought it tried to cover a bit too much in the body. Beautiful ending.
I would certainly read another Amy Bloom...
