This publication emanates from a recent symposium on drug therapy of Parkinson's disease held in Tokyo. The highlights of the symposium include the final report on the results of an original 5-year nationwide treatment trial. Also discussed are current topics relating to the pharmacological managemetn of Parkinson's disease. This includes a look at the pharmacological principles of dopamine agonists, levodopa and a selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B). In addition, a long-term comparison between the combined regimen levodopa/bromocriptine and levodopa monotherapy as primary combination therapy of early parkinson's disease is presented. Finally, the interim results of a clinical trial related to deprenyl and tocopheral antioxidative therapy of Parkinsonism for inhibition of MAO-B are reported.
