Hillside High School on Breeze Hill in Bootle is a warm, welcoming and extremely successful school. It is renowned for its ethos of being child-centred and for helping its pupils to believe in themselves whilst understanding about - and caring for - other people. Hillside opened as a mixed comprehensive school in 1972, but it has a rich history that involves the opening of the school building on Breeze Hill in 1932 and the original school which was opened in Balliol Road in 1910. At different times there were different names: Bootle Grammar School for Girls, Bootle Secondary School for Girls and Balliol Secondary Modern School were all part of the story. This history covers two world wars, changing national systems of education, differences in the lifestyles of teachers over a century and the evolution into the lovely school of today. The days of evacuation to Herefordshire for some girls whilst others lived in Southport or remained at Breeze Hill bring colour to the tale and throughout we are challenged to place the history of Hillside into the context of life in Bootle and the UK at the time. Photographs and illustrations help to recreate the past, and for pupils of the school in particular it provides a sense of identity and understanding of themselves within their community.
