This work presents the letters of Lady Jane Wilde whose affinity for letter-writing, over a period of thirty years, is captured in her correspondence with a Scot, Mr. John Hilson, whom she only met once during a visit to the Borders. Both Lady Jane Wilde and John Hilson retained the youthful image of the other formed at Jedburgh Abbey in August, 1847. John Hilson, a writer and critic of merit, was attracted intellectually to Jane, as were many educated men, but in her youth Jane was also a vibrant, attractive woman. Because of the empathy and trust Jane felt for her correspondent, she revealed not only her intellectual prowess in the letters, but also her thoughts and emotions, and hence biographers of the Wildes have found and will find the letters a valuable source of information.
