This is an account of the career of a member of the Northern Nigerian Administrative Service, set mainly in the remote region of Bornu, the ancient Kanuri kingdom bordering Chad. The book depicts various aspects of British rule, and the character of the official and social life of a political officer in the post-war period, and provides an insight into the process of the transfer of power. Nicholas McClintock joined the Nigerian service in 1939 but spent World War II in Burma. He went to Nigeria in 1946, became Private Secretary to the Governor and from 1960-62 served in Bornu.
