Jake Atkinson is King Welfare. That's King as in - if it's 'king welfare, tell 'em to sod off". Jake is a social worker at a local council in the East Midlands. He's surrounded by a cast of troubled, anti-social, sexually and religiously repressed, distressed and depressed individuals. And that's just his colleagues. As for his clients, it's one sorry tale after another: child-abuse, murder, racist attacks, wrongful imprisonment and a homeless teenager who is allegedly 'as thick as a whale omelette'. Every day Jake has to contend with threats of violence, imprisoned gas meter readers and allegations of rape. Not to mention falling in and out of love. And in the thick of all this joy, a baby called Harley Moss is very ill. The trouble is, no-one not even the ever-observant Jake, notices that his mother Sarah is even sicker than her son. Based on Martin Weinbren's own experience and knowledge as a social worker in various parts of the United Kingdom, King Welfare gives a gritty and gripping no-holds-barred insight into a hidden world.
