Revisiting his 1981 publication, "Kinds at the Door", Bob Holman recently got back with many of the young people who used to come to his family's home where, in 1976, he initiated a community project on the Southdown council estate, Bath. He had given up a university post, and was to remain on the estate for ten years. Now living and working on the Easterhouse estate, Glasgow, he wondered: what the former youngsters thought about the project and its staff; what they considered they had gained from it and what had happened to them as adults; what effects the project had on them, both as youngsters and as adults. Few workers maintain contact with youngsters who attend their projects, By interviewing 51 of them, now in their mid-s, he produces a unique assessment of the impact on a community project on their lives. It is full of vivid personal anecdote, carefully monitored detail and challenging policy analysis.
