All geosynthetics can be damaged mechanically during installation in coarse soils. Such damage reduces their strength and changes their hydraulic properties. These proceedings look at site evidence of how damage occurs and then at how it is assessed. Simulated site testing and laboratory index testing are considered and correlated with on-site experience. The results of a parametric study of the proposed European experimental standard ENV ISO 10 722-1:97 are reviewed. The standard is intended to evaluate in the laboratory, mechanical damage of geotextile during installation. Methods for improving the installation damage resistance of geotextiles are described together with different countries's approaches to specifying resistence to damage.
