In this work, which provides an historical perspective on the development of the history of education through the ages, the views of several thinkers on the nature of education are discussed, for example Plato (427-347 BC), Martin Luther (1485-1546) and John Dewey (1859-1952). The establishment and development of the discipline History of Education in South Africa are also dealt with. The authors also discuss various neo-Marxist perspectives on education, and compare the way in which the USA and South Africa have handled the education of the gifted child.
