"Hanyu Da Cidian" (HDC), the equivalent of the "Oxford English Dictionary", is the most significant development in Chinese lexicography of the last century. Solidly based on historical principles, "HDC" is an essential research tool for serious sinologists and scholars of Chinese history, literature, language, and virtually all other fields in Chinese studies. Initiated as a top priority of the national government in 1975 and published between 1986 and 1994, "HDC" was compiled by more than four hundred researchers and editors. It consists of twelve large volumes containing 18,314 double-columned pages of entries, plus individual volume indices and a separate index volume to all the single head characters in the entire dictionary. All together, "HDC" contains approximately 370,000 entries, more than 1,500,000 citations, and roughly 23,000 different characters.
