From the author of the unforgettable New York Times bestseller We Were Liars comes a masterful new psychological suspense novel-the story of a young woman whose diabolical smarts are her ticket into a charmed life.

But how many times can someone reinvent themselves? You be the judge.

Imogen is a runaway heiress, an orphan, a cook, and a cheat. Jule is a fighter, a social chameleon, and an athlete. An intense friendship. A disappearance. A murder, or maybe two. A bad romance, or maybe three. Blunt objects, disguises, blood, and chocolate. The American dream, superheroes, spies, and villains. A girl who refuses to give people what they want from her. A girl who refuses to be the person she once was.

MEDIA REVIEWS

It's a captivating, suspenseful story made all the more bewitching by Lockhart's twisty narrative, and she constantly keeps readers guessing with unpredictable turns and eye-opening reveals. This quietly unsettling, cinematic novel is deliciously suspenseful, and while it's slim, it packs a real punch. Teens who love to hate antiheroes will be enraptured. - Booklist

An excellent choice recommended for teens and adults who love twisty mysteries, stories about class conflict, and tough-as-nails teen girls. - School Library Journal

Lockhart blends the privileged glamour of We Were Liars with a twisty, backward-running plot that's slick with cinematic violence. Calling to mind her own The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, she offers a shrewd critique of the roles traditionally available to female characters in literature and film. A bracing pace, a slew of far-flung locations, and a storyline that runs mostly in reverse will keep readers on their toes, never entirely sure of what these girls are responsible for or capable of. - Publishers Weekly

One of the hottest beach reads - MTV.com

An intoxicating psychological thriller ...Jule is an unreliable narrator the deceptive likes of which many readers won't be prepared for. - The Horn Book

A rollercoaster of a mystery novel by the author who brought you We Were Liars. If you like your novels full of intrigue, suspense, and completely unpredictable plot twists then this book is definitely for you. - The Book Bag

This smart update of Patricia Highsmith's "The Talented Mr.Ripley" inserts modern cultural commentary into the classic plot of a con artist on a fiendish climb up the social ladder...Jule is undeniably and thrillingly the star of her own adventure - Chicago Tribune

An instant classic for a new generation - My Chestnut Reading Tree

A thriller that will leave you shook from start to finish - Maximum Pop

I read this in just over 2.5 hours because I couldn't put it down. Told in reverse, taking masses of inspiration from The Talented Mr Ripley but with a female main protagonist, Genuine Fraud was a huge page turner. It did, in substance, feel like a homage to Ripley and to Highsmith, the author captures you with her beautiful descriptive prose, rich and layered settings and hugely divisive characters. By the end of it you know everything, yet you know nothing. This is a book that demands a second reading - Liz Loves Books

It's going to take over the world - Lev Grossman, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Magicians trilogy

Seriously cannot put it down - Melissa de la Cruz, bestselling author of Alex And Eliza

Genuine Fraud's twisty, jet-setting plot is guaranteed to suck you in and give you a sweet weekend escape - Buzzfeed

Genuine Fraud is clever, intriguing and utterly absorbing. Psychological thrillers are often a hard sell for me, but Lockhart provides a masterclass in how to get it right. Nothing is every heavy-handed, but the tension builds steadily and the reveals, when they come, are all the more effective for the lack of the obvious foreshadowing that so often dogs adult novels in this genre. The characters have more layers than an onion skin, and peeling them back will lead to a few tears! - Crime Review

Really interesting, very well crafted, I loved this book! - Savidge Reads

A solid page turner - Bibliophile Book Club

A brilliant, twisty thriller--I loved it! - Karen M McManus, bestelling author of One Of Us Is Lying

Head-spinningly clever and gripping - Claire McGowan, bestselling author of The Lost

It's a fantastic, mind-bending brilliant piece of fiction and shows a wonderful growth to E.Lockharts writing. Genuine Fraud is one of my top 5 reads this year! - Drinking Books

A noir thriller full of glamour and suspense that will keep twisting you up in knots as it skitters backwards and forwards in time. From the author of bestseller We Were Liars the two strong female characters will keep you guessing until the end. A story that explores how we identify ourselves and others. The Talented Mr Ripley meets Great Expectations - South Wales Evening Post

It's only a short book, coming in at 260 pages, but it certainly packs a punch and is memorable because it's just that bit different from the current batch of psychological suspense novels and I applaud the author for being brave enough to shake things up a little. If you enjoyed The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith then this book will most certainly appeal as, by the author's own admission, she was influenced by this author, amongst others. I especially enjoyed the literary references which are scattered like pearls throughout Genuine Fraud, especially Jule's interest in Charles Dickens and his novel, Great Expectations - Jaffa Reads Too

I couldn't put it down - I Read Novels

Nail-bitingly tense, this exploration of identity, entitlement and feminism is a perfect psychological thriller and surely, soon, a movie - Daily Mail

An update of The Talented Mr Ripley, told in trendy reverse chronology - Financial Times

Genuine Fraud had me flipping pages quicker than I could have imagined. Starting in the present and working backwards a couple of weeks/ months at a time was a unique structure for me, but I loved it. The female characters are all fairly feisty, but Jule is a law unto herself and a brilliant protagonist. I would definitely love to see more of her - My Little Library in the Attic

It's a gripping, multi-layered read which I found compulsive and thrilling - Damp Pebble

If you enjoy a quirky thriller, then this is definitely for you - Secret Library

It's hard to see how E. Lockhart could surpass the bestselling We Were Liars but this release is another psychological suspense novel - U Magazine

A dark and twisted tale about obsession, that's set against the backdrop of exotic locations, Genuine Fraud is a cleverly written story that will have the reader sitting on the edge of their seat - Handwritten Girl

"Genuine Fraud" is a disquieting book, one built craftily enough to reward repeat readings - New York Times

There is lots of action and intrigue in this novel, told backwards, about a young woman who sets about getting the kind of life that she wants - Turn2Page1

The book takes a really great dark twist, high paced, creepy and twisty. Like We Were Liars this is one you can read in one sitting - Books and Quills

Something else I loved about Genuine Fraud is how it is written in reverse. With chapters starting at eighteen and counting down to one, it opens with Jule and the other woman in the hotel then runs backward describing how Jule got there in the first place. Murder, identity theft, lies, deceit, manipulation. This book has it all. And more. Such a brilliant read - absolutely loved it!! Chilling. Shocking. Compelling - Ronnie Turner

an addictive and shocking feminist thriller - Lena Dunham

A suspenseful YA mystery and a twisty thriller rolled into one. Patricia Highsmith fans, this one's for you - Culture Fly

An amazing tale full of twists and turns - Nat's Reading Cloud

This may sound like a strange book and to be honest it was but hell it was tense, it was compelling and I loved everything about it - Books From Dusk To Dawn

Equal parts tense, exciting, creepy... a highly enjoyable read that I would recommend - The Arts Shelf

I want to tell the whole world about it. It's INCREDIBLE - Hannah Witton

A punchy thriller... Genuine Fraud by the skilled story-spinner E Lockhart is a sophisticated, emotionally literate howdunit in The Talented Mr Ripley mould. As well as a mystery to solve, there's human need and insecurity to contemplate - The Observer

This is a thriller which references the American Dream, our love of spies and true life horror stories. It plays on the desire to reinvent yourself, to gain a fortune and live a carefree life. Its protagonist will stay in your memory long after you have finished the story - Armadillo Magazine

Lockhart's fast-paced storytelling conveys a sense of nervous energy which, coupled with the storyline, makes this an unsettling but thoroughly satisfying read - Buzzfeed

A killer psychological suspense thriller that grabs you by the collar and drags you on one hell of a ride - Culture Fly

It's fun, fearless and, at times, genuinely frightening. Once you start reading, you won't dare put it down - YAdulting

a thrilling guilty pleasure... Jule is a bad-ass anti-hero - Irish Times

like nothing I have read before. Part psychological thriller, part action movie, Genuine Fraud is fast-paced, edgy and different - Dot Scribbles

gripping tale of mystery and suspense which will leave you on the edge of your seat - Children's Books Ireland

Genuine Fraud is a thrilling and suspenseful novel which will wrong-foot readers constantly. It is refreshing to see a YA book taking a chance with a less formulaic style of writing, and a much darker and disturbing plot - Carousel Magazine

It's a story of good and evil, privilege and want, elite and envy. It's dark and twisty - a tale of self-invention and self-deception. It's a fast and engaging read - Izzy Reads
