Can you imagine what a story made with a class of children talking together and sharing ideas might be like? This book contains twenty two of them and you will find they are very different to other stories you may have read. They were made with children aged between 7 and 11 who had the help of an expert story maker to guide them. He loved the stories so much he made it his job to write them down so they can be read by you. These stories are made from the ideas of children. I have worked with children in hundreds of classes, helping them to become good story makers by taking along some simple objects, such as a broken violin, an old lamp and a top hat and challenging children to put them into a story. There is a rule too: no people, characters, places or parts of stories that children have come across already are allowed into the story. Everything has to be made up. My job is to ask the right questions, the ones that make sure the story goes well such as "What were they really thinking when they said that?" or "Do they have a secret?" I have loved being part of making so many stories. Some of them have had their own magic and made me want to spend time in writing them down in the best way I can so that lots of other people know about them. They are the ones in this book and I hope you enjoy reading them. At the beginning of each story I have placed a picture of one of the objects that had to be in it. There is one where I haven't, and there is a picture of a sign mentioned in the story instead. You might enjoy guessing what the children had to put into this one.
