Olga Sedakova's book of philosophical and religious essays introduces a highly original and extremely controversial thinker to the Western reader. The central place in Sedakova's philosophical thought belongs to the investigation of the notion of existential freedom and liberating power of arts (poetry in particular), which Sedakova finds in adherence to Russian and European classical cultural traditions, with Christianity being an integral part of it. The controversial nature of her philosophical system presented in the essays is derived from Sedakova's particular understanding of the concept of freedom in the contemporary world, which places her in opposition to both the "new left" and modern-day fundamentalists. IN this context, Sedakova's "conservatism" can be seen as more radical than the radicalism of the post-modernists, as a new cultural dissent equally reviling the "old totalitarianism," the new commercialism, and the "new left."
