Feminist theory has been at the cutting edge of critical analysis for over two decades. This book applies a broad range of feminist theory to film analysis. Chapter One introduces the key terms and debates in a historical survey of contemporary feminist theory, feminist aesthetics and film theory from the 1970s, with a special focus on the work of Laura Mulvey, Annette Kuhn, E. Ann Kaplan and Belle Hooks. The book goes on to examine the key questions posed by feminism, including: feminist theories about pornography and the gaze in reference to "Penthouse", "Klute" and "Variety"; feminist ideas about reproduction and the work of Douglas, Kristeva, Lichtenberg-Ettinger and Klein on masculine fears of the mothering body appled to Cronenberg's "Dead Ringers"; the new work in feminist theory about autobiography and authoriship applied to Gorris's "A Question of Silence" and "Broken Mirrors"; theories of postmodernism and a reading of Virginia Woolf's and Sally Potter's "Orlando" as postmodern paraodies of history and gender identity; the new aesthetics of Black feminism in the writings of Walker, Lorde and Christian and a study of Dash's "Daughters of the Dust"; a survey of feminist independent film practice from 1970 to 1990, with a case study of the "person is political". The book should be of interest to students and scholars in women's studies, film studies, cultural studies, media studies, art and media practice, as well as all those interested in women's representation in cinema.
