Through close readings of major texts, this guide introduces students to English Renaissance Tragedy, its contexts and enduring influence. Dramatists of the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries in England developed an extraordinarily popular and intellectually ambitious form of tragedy that addressed not only permanent human problems of love, desire, and mortality, but also commented on topical political controversies, such as the question of the rights of subjects against those of kings. This book introduces readers to the perspectives of English Renaissance tragedy by offering close readings of selected famous works by dramatists such as Shakespeare, Marlowe, Webster, Middleton and Ford. It also gives some account of the conditions under which English Renaissance playwrights and actors worked; the nature of the publication of dramatic texts in the period; and, some of the key themes of critical discussion of the plays in recent times. In addition, it offers an account of some approaches to tragedy in general that help to illuminate the works considered here. Overall, it aims to show that these plays are not museum pieces, but address issues we still grapple with today.
